Most testosterone talk points at your gym routine or your sleep. Almost nobody points at your plate. But a handful of everyday foods and drinks have real, peer-reviewed research behind their ability to knock testosterone down — some of it within hours. Here are three of the best-documented foods that lower testosterone, the mechanism behind each one, and what to actually do about it.

Alcohol: The Leydig Cell Problem

The finding. A 2024 meta-analysis in Andrology pooling human studies found that chronic alcohol consumption measurably lowers testosterone in men, and a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the same field confirmed disrupted luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone levels tied to regular drinking.

The mechanism. Ethanol and its breakdown product acetaldehyde directly interfere with the Leydig cells in your testes — the cells that manufacture testosterone. Older mechanistic work published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research showed ethanol and acetaldehyde inhibit the enzyme steps Leydig cells need to convert cholesterol into testosterone. On top of that, chronic drinking disrupts signaling further up the chain, blunting the brain’s LH signal that tells the testes to produce in the first place.

This isn’t about the occasional beer at a cookout. It’s regular, heavier intake that shows up in the research — one more reason “a few nights a week” adds up more than it feels like it does.

Added Sugar: The Insulin Spike

The finding. In a 2013 study published in Clinical Endocrinology, researchers gave healthy men a standard 75-gram oral glucose load — roughly what you’d get from a large sugary drink — and measured their testosterone before and after. Testosterone dropped by an average of about 25 percent within two hours, and stayed suppressed in some men for up to five hours. A follow-up study in Endocrine (2018) found the same effect from a mixed meal, not just straight sugar.

The mechanism. A fast glucose spike triggers a matching insulin spike, and insulin has a direct suppressive effect on the pituitary gland’s pulsatile release of LH — the same signal alcohol disrupts by a different route. Research published in the American Journal of Physiology traced this directly: acute glucose ingestion blunts LH pulses, and testosterone follows LH down. No LH signal, no order sent to the testes.

This is acute, not permanent — your levels recover. But a dad who’s hitting that spike three times a day, every day, is running his hormones through that dip on repeat.

Licorice Root: The Herbal Surprise

The finding. A small but frequently cited study in Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes had seven healthy men eat about 7 grams of licorice root daily for one week. Average testosterone dropped roughly 26 percent by the end of the week — enough that the same research group published a follow-up letter in the New England Journal of Medicine flagging it as a real, reproducible effect.

The mechanism. Licorice root’s active compound, glycyrrhizin, inhibits enzymes your body needs for testosterone synthesis, including steps in the pathway that converts precursor hormones into testosterone, while also speeding up how fast testosterone gets cleared from your system. It’s a double hit: less made, more removed.

This matters for guys drinking licorice tea regularly or using licorice-root supplements for digestion — not for someone who eats a piece of black licorice candy once a year.

The Action

You don’t need to fear your fridge. One move covers all three: keep alcohol to moderate, occasional intake; swap sugary drinks and snacks for whole-food, protein-forward options, especially around training; and treat licorice root tea or supplements as an occasional thing, not a daily habit.

None of these foods will tank your testosterone from one exposure. The research is clear that it’s the daily pattern — not the one-off — that actually moves the number.
